As an ex-flower child with roots firmly planted in an anti-something groundwork, the Dadaists spoke to me in their unique expressions. Since I've always been a rebel without a cause, maybe it's this foundness in abandonment that attracts me most. What someone else deems worthless maybe isn’t?
Subtraction of self in a shadow selfie is a favorite pursuit. Shadow selfies avoid such questions as does this make me look fat, old, blonde? Less can reveal more essence sometimes. The founding Dadaists looked for explanations to the chaos around them as abstract expressionism became a realm of possibility far greater than mere re-creation of the realism in many art forms.
The act of taking an original — text or visual element—and eliminating or adding parts until a few remaining words or pieces reveals some new internal core hidden, as if in code, for someone to discover. Austin Kleon and Mary Ruefle use this method often in their erasure poems.
In a writing group I facilitate periodically, I've found various interesting on-line tools This one from LaSalle offers an easy way to reshuffle your words or someone else’s if you are more of a digital fan than an analog one. Try it and see what new meanings you discover.
Enjoy. Do some Dada today! Feel free to share any links you find that you think are fun. My hope is you will find creative ways to express what it is you think about when you are thinking about things
Have a creative, thought-filled day!
